Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the deputy director of Korean American Family Services, a nonprofit located in Los Angeles, California. We provide multi-social services to the Korean immigrant community, which include mental health and domestic violence support services, as well as foster family resources.
What challenge were you trying to address with eqHR Solutions Inc?
We went from 20–50 employees in about three years, and this quick growth needed separate attention for HR. At the time, we weren't big enough to hire our own in-house HR consultant. Therefore, we decided to hire eqHR Solutions to help us as an external HR team.
What was the scope of their involvement?
The main aspect that eqHR Solutions helps us with is managing our payroll, which used to be handled by our finance department. Separating that responsibility has been helpful for our team.
We do our hiring and recruitment process internally. Once we’ve selected a new employee, eqHR Solutions provides services to help them be set. Additionally, they handle retirement, employee benefits, onboarding, and termination processes.
eqHR Solutions is in charge of answering any day-to-day HR questions that our team can’t handle. Furthermore, they provide me with constant feedback and support for whatever question I might have. They’ve also helped us with occasional training for our staff on workplace bias. Lastly, they helped us update our employee handbook with 2021 policies and state laws.
What is the team composition?
Our main point of contact is Dana (HR & Payroll Advisor), but her supervisors are Lauren (VP) and June (CEO).
How did you come to work with eqHR Solutions Inc?
We got eqHR Solutions’ information through referrals. I don’t remember exactly who referred them to us but it was either one of our board members or CPAs.
How much have you invested with them?
Our retainer service fee is $575 per month for five guaranteed hours. In addition, we spend $125 per hour for any extra support.
What is the status of this engagement?
eqHR Solutions Inc started working with our organization in July 2015. I've only worked with them since December 2020 when I joined the organization, and our engagement is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The services provided by eqHR Solutions have been really helpful for our organization. For instance, our finance team doesn't have to take care of payroll anymore, and that’s allowed them to streamline their role. It has also benefited me personally because I don’t have very deep knowledge of HR, and they’ve resolved any doubts that I’ve had and provided feedback.
How did eqHR Solutions Inc perform from a project management standpoint?
Our communication is mainly through email, but we have phone calls occasionally.
What did you find most impressive about them?
We’ve enjoyed their support and their timeliness. They’ve been with us long enough and understand our temperament because they've taken their time to understand our organization, style, and how we made decisions. Also, they’re very good at keeping a boundary as a consulting agency. They give options and don’t push anything, but they leave it up to us to make final decisions regarding HR.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No. I’m very happy with how things have been.
Any advice for potential customers?
I recommend setting time aside to understand each other and discuss expectations. I believe doing so helps eqHR Solutions give appropriate support and advice. If they don’t know the client’s company, they will give advice that might not be applicable for them. Knowing and understanding each other was very good for our relationship.
eqHR Solutions Inc’s HR services have been excellent throughout. By managing payroll, the team has reduced the amount of work on the client’s end. Additionally, they’ve engaged closely with the client and taken time to understand their needs, which has resulted in a long-term relationship.
