Feedback summary:

The app and web portal have successfully simplified and made weekly payroll duties more manageable. DevMode’s ability to provide comprehensive design, development, and support services promotes productivity. They’re also responsive and able to work effectively in a collaborative environment.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the IT development manager of Q3 Contracting, a utility construction company based in the Midwest. I run the software development side of our IT house.

What challenge were you trying to address with DevMode, Inc.?

We needed help with creating a field-based solution for the iPad to allow our team to track their crews’ time and handle union requirements.

What was the scope of their involvement?

DevMode was heavily involved in the first project’s requirement gathering and design phases, as well as the actual development. They worked with both my team and some of Q3’s business stakeholders to better understand the problem. We went through a design process after which DevMode created a mockup. We then used Swift to develop the mobile app specific to the iPad.

We also used Node.js and Angular to develop the web portal for payroll staff, supervisors, and managers to approve time recorded through the iPad app.

Additionally, they’ve used Angular, Vue, and JavaScript to help us build several other apps.

What is the team composition?

We’ve worked with five people from their team, including an architect, a mobile developer, a web developer, a third developer, and a project manager.

How did you come to work with DevMode, Inc.?

They’d done work with me at a previous company.

How much have you invested in them?

We’ve spent around $500,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in January 2016 and the relationship is ongoing as we work on other web-related projects.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The construction company has accepted the end product pretty well. The fact that payroll happens every week and that the team can do it via their iPads is a huge victory for their company.

How did DevMode, Inc. perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re great. They handle everything from onboarding to requirements gathering, as well as hypercare and initial support.

We mostly communicate through email. Their project manager and developer have used Trello for managing the tasks involved with some more recent engagements.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re extremely responsive. We have a full tech team here as well, so their developers work with ours’ in a mixed environment. They’ve handled this well and have been a great partner to work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Some of the QA process has been a bit bumpy at times when it comes to rehashing out bugs and making sure every small detail is taken care of.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I’ve seen both their turnkey project management where they’ll take care of everything and execute the whole project, as well as their more involved collaborative environment. Taking advantage of either or striking a balance between the two is something DevMode offers as a project management model that many other agencies can’t handle.
