Introduce your business and what you do there.

We're developing a crowdsourced social media platform for search and couponing. It's a live website and live iOS and Android apps. I am the director.

What challenge were you trying to address with DevTechnosys?

I hired another company for the website and had that all built out and launched. Then, I put out the bid for the Android and iOS applications and a little website clean up here and there. DevTechnosys won that bid.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I needed a complete custom iOS and Android app built from scratch, not based on anything that's existing out there. I told them to take the web application PHP, JSON, HTML5 stuff out of my website relational SQL [structured query language] database in the back-end and turn that into the Android and iOS apps.

How did you come to work with DevTechnosys?

When we started to launch this, we did it through what is now Upwork and read through their profile along with the competition. The decision came down to previous work demonstrated and price.

How much have you invested with DevTechnosys?

It was from $50,000 to $200,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

I am still working with them [as of September 2016]. Although the apps are published and in my inbox and in final state, they're keeping in touch with me.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

One of the challenges of my app that they were able to overcome is understand that I have a database that has 300 categories, 1,000 subcategories, and multiple thousands of items, which are brands like McDonald's, Pizza Hut, every food and restaurant, every sports team – anything that's a commercial product in my database. They developed a very unique app to scroll through all that data very quickly in an iOS and Android format so that it's not drop-down boxes. It's not the traditional way that you would view that data. I did it with a sliding interface. You slide through the first categories, and you slide through the second categories, and you slide through the options and find what you want quickly in alphabetical order, which I think makes the app more fun and more user-friendly. They developed that just based on me asking them to do something cool.

How did DevTechnosys perform from a project management standpoint?

They are hyper-communicative. There were times where I was the slow-going end of the deal because they would publish a version or questions, and I would get back to them as timely as possible, and then they'd do it again. I guess I would call it DevOps-like mentality on their part – continuous feedback and process improvement. The project manager was always very over-communicative.

What did you find most impressive about DevTechnosys?

I felt their flexibility and hours was better than other companies I've worked with overseas. They were willing to work with me during United States 9-to-5 hours. They were willing to work with me late at night and were always flexible in scheduling. Other differentiators might be access to engineering resources. It just seemed like I never had to wait. It seemed like my project was always a priority for them, or they had resources ready for it whenever I needed them.

Are there any areas DevTechnosys could improve?

I don't think so compared to their peers. If anything, their English skills and translating are what I would say. It seemed like maybe English was not their first language, so I'd have to correct things on that. I think that's very typical, so I wouldn't ding them on that by any means, but it's just something that I noticed.

I’m having a mobile application and two websites built. My application is related to the stock market. We get signals from 4X related to the currencies, commodities, and stocks, and then we deliver these signals to other mobile users. They can get the signals on their smartphone, and if they want to look for a particular signal or stock, they can do it. I am the CEO [Chief Executive Officer].

What challenge were you trying to address with DevTechnosys?

It is very complex to implement the stock market with a mobile application. I was trying to find applications that already dealt with the stock market, and there were only a few. It was very hard to find an experienced organization.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They had the responsibility to develop an iPhone and Android application along with a marketing website. We also had another website before the applications, where we were handling everything through that website. They were responsible for everything. I delivered my requirements to them and they made it very efficient from start to finish.

How did you come to work with DevTechnosys?

I tried to find an organization that had already worked with a stock market application, and I found that DevTechnosys has experience with the stock market in websites and mobile applications. That’s why I chose them. I found various companies and received proposals from multiple vendors and vetted them. Regarding DevTechnosys, we received very good references. Then we started communicating with them. We found them very flexible. The most important thing was they were familiar with the stock market functions. Their ability and willingness to work on a tight timeline was one of the key factors in choosing them.

I don’t, we just released the application last month. We are currently working on marketing to promote it. We have about 250 downloads. We’re updating the apps to make them better for users.

They completed my project very well. I am very satisfied. I really like them. They have a very transparent process. That made the project efficient and easy to understand. Communication was good. We used Skype and there was a project management tool called Asana.

They are great to work with. I also learned a lot of things from the development process. When I started my mobile application, I was not aware of the technical side. We were building a custom application. We have an NDA [nondisclosure agreement] with the client, so I can't go into detail. It is built using PHP framework known at KPHP. It was too big of an application that we were able to manage in house.

They managed all the development. I'm more known as a business analyst or stakeholder. They are the actual development team. I'm not doing any developing. They handle all the project management. I give them the business requirements, and they execute the development.

We started to get some overseas quotes for various vendors across the world. Then, we found the company, and we interviewed them. They knew their stuff, and we could tell that quickly. We decided to partner with them. We found them through Elance – now Upwork. We interviewed many other companies through Elance. They had the most experience by far and the highest ratings and profiles. It was clear they were a leader when it came to outsourcing work. During our interview process, it was obvious as to why they had so many hours and money accrued on Elance. They were very capable and knowledgeable of the outsourcing type of infrastructure. They were very accommodating. They opened up our eyes to many things that we didn't predict. They're very professional.

The biggest project is around $100,000.

We have several that have been completed. We have some that are ongoing [as of August 2016].

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

I don't have metrics. They are extremely easy to get hold of, and they are dedicated almost to a fault. I have to remind them to go to sleep every night. They're very loyal. Nothing is ever too much. They can see things before they happen.

How did DevTechnosys perform from a project management standpoint?

They were fantastic. There was a glitch. We had a different PM when we started one of the projects. That person seemed to have some issues that they were working out. The CEO of the company acknowledged that the PM was not cutting it, and we would be issued a new PM. They were very apologetic. I speak to them every morning, and we collaborate as far as strategy goes. He gives me his input, nine out of 10 times I agree with him.

What distinguishes DevTechnosys from other providers?

It would be their dedication. We're a small team, and they knew that. When it came to learning new APIs [application programming interfaces] for different services like payment gateways or SMS [short message service] text messaging, they were researching all that on my behalf. That was very helpful. It would have taken me a long time to do that. They were going the extra mile to keep the project on pace.

Is there anything DevTechnosys could have improved or done differently?

Maybe technology-wise to keep some digital records. It's a hard mix of wanting transparency to know where we're at, but also knowing that only gives you so much information. It's somewhat of a crutch sometimes. They acknowledge that. It wouldn't have hurt to have some project management software that I could've looked at and get a status. That's a double-edged sword. I can't say that would've made things much better. If you had the project management software, but the PM doesn't communicate it would've been more of a detriment than an asset.

The responsiveness. They don't charge extra for more changes. They work long hours to make sure everything is to your specifications. We were really happy with the quality.

I didn't have a designer on staff so they provided the design layout for some of the screens. They gave us multiple options that we could look at. Then, they did the coding after it was approved – HTML and PHP – all the necessary CSS, JavaScript, and mySQL. They developed and tested the product from start to finish. They also provided feedback about what they thought might work better.

I use various referral services, and I came across them on Upwork. I vet, and I go through recommendations, I want to see some of the client work that they've done before. Once we start to feel comfortable that the developer has ample experience in what we're looking for, then we interview them and vet them.

The first thing I noticed is their overall professionalism as far as defining the scope. They try to understand everything up front so they can determine a price.

I'm not a technical person, so I have some issues on how to manage technical issues that arise. DevTechnosys is always there to assist. The project management was awesome.

There are many companies available in India. DevTechnosys differentiated themselves from others because they are a complete solution package that ranges from design to development to marketing. They have a marketing team that promotes the app or website after it's completed. They have great project management. Their overall process is great. They create wireframes, mockups, and specification document. That helps you understand the process. They're experts with the technical side. Their communication is good. There are very complex algorithms and calculations in my projects that made them very difficult. They were able to complete everything on time, which I really appreciated

At first, there was a problem with the language barrier, but they improved. They made themselves proficient with everything – their technical skills, communication skills, and project management skills. Today they're really a brilliant organization with a lot of expertise and analytical skills.

I interviewed 15 firms. I'm technical by nature. I've managed business units and software engineering people that did the same thing. I can't code but I have a working knowledge of technology. What sold me on them was their business analysts. They interacted with me through the process. Their responsiveness and attention to detail was good.

Development is not cut and dry, it's a very dynamic environment. Overall, DevTechnosys kept in touch on a regular basis, which is key. You have to be flexible on both sides with the schedule. Once you start coding, you don't know what you don't know. The key is communication and ensuring that if we had to expand or contract something the responsiveness was there.

What distinguishes DevTechnosys from other providers?

It came down to feeling as if you had a partner. I felt their customer service was good. I would recommend them to people. They delivered. I had high expectations in terms of the technology.

There's always improvements. Nobody's perfect. From a customer's perspective, I think DevTechnosys could bring some more people in and get things done faster. But, I understand they have a budget.
