Hyper-localized Websites For More Direct Customer Relationships
Yara International is the world’s leading supplier of plant nutrients in the form of mineral fertilizers – an essential ingredient in modern agriculture. Dept and Yara partnered to launch a new website which provided tailored content, expert advice and practical tools to develop a more direct relationship with their diverse range of customers in the farming and industry around the world.
Dept set out to help Yara retain global control of their digital assets while talking to their customers on a truly local level.
We worked with teams in each country to deliver hyper-localization. Then we designed, built, and rolled out a new website to over 35 countries, in 19 languages, each one engaging four different audiences and sectors.
We also built import tools that helped to pull data from other Yara sources (such as application databases). We integrated this with existing internal applications via web-services, to provide product recommendations and growth stage advice for crops.
Yara’s new platform is globally controlled but locally adapted, specific to countries with tailored information and guidance to suit each particular audience. Customers now have more information than ever to help them use Yara products effectively, which, in turn, helps them to profit from higher yields, efficiency, and safety.

JM has been an influencer in its field for over 200 years, applying unrivaled scientific expertise to enable efficient use of our planet’s natural resources. JM’s focus has always been to work closely with its customers and to develop tailored solutions. Dept and JM partnered to create and compose a new website that is consumer focused.
Dept was given the task of designing and building a new, visually engaging site, centralized onto an advanced content management system, Sitecore.
The business focus consisted of adopting a digital-first approach, a centralized content management system for all of their products, services, markets, and languages to adapt.
Dept conducted a Sitecore audit to provide expert insight on the functionality available, and how best to utilize the features.
The build of the site has future personalization at the forefront of their minds. This will enable JM to serve alternate versions of the site to returning visitors who match specific persona behavior.

The matthey.com website rebuild was a huge success. The centralized CMS has provided JM with more control of its digital presence, and the new site has increased brand exposure and awareness of its products and services.

A Revolutionized Way of Tackling Record And Content Management
Everyone knows Guinness World Records™, the universally recognized authority on record-breaking achievement. For over 60 years, people across the globe are enthralled and eagerly await the discovery of their favorite record breaking acts. Have you ever tried to break a record? Dept and Guinness partnered to make the process of creating and maintaining records easier and more accessible.
To give you a glimpse into Guinness World Records ™, currently, it has over 40,000 records and 1,000 new applications weekly from 174 countries, with over 6,000 records approved annually. Dept’s objective was clear: transform the processes for creating and managing records.
Dept implemented SDL Tridion Sites which offers multiple benefits. It improved system processes by providing a centralized view of records, including the workflow stage and engagement history.
By jumping to a digital solution, the organization reduced its avalanche of paper, and ensured consistency in process and communication. The technical solution’s ability to repurpose content, increased digital marketing opportunities and enabled the easy creation of microsites. The content management system and website redesign have facilitated localized content for the organization’s global users.
The outcome spurred a full digital transformation of the organization. Dept helped Guinness to improve its offline processes and revolutionized the way it tackles record and content management.

Since launching, PlayStation Gear has won multiple awards and is continuously praised in the gaming-community and over social media.

GE Lighting: Rolling Out One Coherent Website, Worldwide
The professional division of General Electric, GE Lighting, required a standardized, global digital platform to lower costs, improve quality, and reduce time to market. The fragmented infrastructure model caused duplicated effort, high costs, lack of consistency, and slow response times, all of which were preventing the business from communicating effectively with their global audience. Dept and GE Lighting partnered to develop an integrated platform, combining central control with local flexibility, using a centralized CMS, SDL Tridion Sites.
Dept moved GE Lighting from a fragmented to a centralized digital infrastructure model by consolidating regional processes, tools and development. This ensured that brand consistency and local needs could be met by developing a solution that would enable the easy and efficient sharing of localized content and reusable rich media. Dep developed a global platform able to support fourteen, consistent websites.
Dept managed the implementation and global rollout of GE Lighting’s site to thirteen countries, across four continents, in nine languages.
GE Lighting can now utilize consistent, reusable global assets, templates, and processes, which has the added benefit of ensuring consistency across the organization, and aiding localization. The project was recognized at a GE group level with the internal team receiving an award for the project.

Centralizing a fragmented global organization
Adama Agricultural Solutions Ltd, a leading crop protection manufacturer and distributor, undertook a major global re-branding project that required a centralized approach to content management for its multi-lingual, multi-brand sites.
Before the re-brand, Adama operated 40 separate brand names and hundreds of product brands, in over 45 markets. The company had 28 international websites using different CMS systems, brand messaging was disjointed, and there were varying digital maturity levels across its global subsidiaries.
Dept was appointed to build a global, centralized content management system (SDL Tridion Sites), project manage the roll-out of Adama’s 49 new websites in over 40 countries, and deliver training to all of its international markets.
The 49 websites were not just a translated version of the same website; product offerings differ across the markets, and the websites needed to reflect the specific needs and target audiences in each country. To achieve this, a dedicated roll-out team worked closely with Adama’s local teams to deliver relevant content.
The success of this large scale roll-out hinged on developing the skills of the local markets. Dept delivered CMS training to content editors in 33 markets. By up-skilling local teams, the pre-launch content preparation was achieved and the local markets are now capable and empowered to manage their sites going forward.

Billabong: For Improved Web Surfing
Billabong is known for its modern lifestyle clothing and cool accessories. The sports supplier also offers everything the fashion-conscious surfer, skater, or snowboarders of today needs. As part of the Boardriders brand family, Billabong has already made the switch to the highly scalable e-commerce platform Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Billabong, therefore, decided to redesign its online shop and placed its trust in the technical know-how of Dept.
A clear view is not only a must on a surfboard but also when shopping on the internet. Dept, therefore, decided to change the site’s user interface. The customer can now expect a transparent and streamlined main navigation page, which only differentiates between a “men’s” and “women’s” section. Gender-specific garments and accessories then follow in the sub-navigation. Larger pictures and a straightforward design also create a uniform look.
The outcome was a blog, which is intended to improve how specific target groups are addressed and improve communication with customers. In addition, the integration of the blog increases the search engine ranking of the website and strengthens the brand experience and lifestyle of the brand. Sales campaigns and loyalty schemes also keep customers committed to the label and are therefore popular with customers.

Mobile App Dev for Title Services Company
"They were really good at what they do."
the reviewer
the review
The client submitted this review online.
Please describe your company and your position there.
Founder.
For what projects/services did your company hire Devetry, and what were your goals?
The app was basically just an idea. So I worked with Alex to figure out the best plan on moving forward. I worked with Laura to sit down and brainstorm how the app will work. We have a workflow for buyers and a workflow for sellers. Once that was mapped out, I worked with Taylor and Logan on the design. We came up with a color scheme and the best way to leverage design to compliment the workflow.
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
Working with Alex is why I moved forward. I talked to a lot of companies in Denver and Austin. You would be surprised how many don't even call back. However, Alex knew the best way forward based on where I was at progress wise. He was also just a nice guy, not the stuck up tech type who rides a high horse everywhere. The same could be said for everyone I have worked with at Devtry.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
First working with Alex on the best steps. Second was a series of brainstorming meetings with Alex, Logan, Taylor, Laura, and myself. We got together to go over what the app is, what problem it is solving, and the best way to solve those problems. After this, I spent time with Laura mapping out the entire workflow of the app and getting into the weeds of how everything needs to work. Next I worked with Laura, Taylor, and Logan on creating the design theme and then the 7 screens to use for building an app in the future or using those to raise VC funds.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
- Laura, Project Manager
- Alex, Project Manager
- Taylor, Project Designer
- Logan, UI Manager
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
The most important outcomes have been understanding the denver real estate market better. The app is in the real estate space. Being able to understand how buyers and sellers are responding and dealing with an insane real estate market. This was important because we could all learn real time all the different ways the app would have to work for different buyers and sellers.
This was information I didn't have before we began working. The other outcome was working on the workflow of the app. Once we had a better understanding of the market our app will be operating in and could then fuse that data with the workflow of our app we then had a foundation that could be used to build a real and reliable app.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
Usually email, slack, and google meet. Plenty of meetings over google meet which is fantastic because what can be done over meet in an hour, can take days with email.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
Communication, design, and the ease to work with. They were really good at what they do. They are not a sterile or unapproachable technology development company, and that is not easy to find.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
None.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I work for one of the US Department of Energy's national laboratories. More specifically, I'm a principal investigator for several R&D projects in the Commercial Buildings Research Group. I oversee the planning, development, design, and release of several building energy modeling software tools and simulation programs.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
Part of my responsibilities is to procure work outside of our group when we have the need, so I hired Devetry to help us develop a custom widget.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Devetry had previously helped design and developed a custom, web-based geometry creation and editing software for building management applications. This was successfully launched a few years ago, but it was high time for us to tend to the problems that our user base has experienced with the tool.
For this latest engagement, they’re currently addressing user requests and software issues, the deliverables being software issue resolution and enhancement implementation. Our internal research team is not well-versed in developing web-based applications and widgets, so Devetry is working to improve runtime performance and coding.
What is the team composition?
For the specific project, we’re working with 2–3 developers, one of whom was the senior software developer in our previous engagement. He is intimately familiar with the technology.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
A colleague of ours had already established contact with Devetry for the development of the software. We decided to hire them again for this software enhancement project since they proved to be consistent in delivering high-quality work in our previous engagement. They exceeded our expectations when we were just developing the software, so we brought them in again to resolve the issues. They’re highly flexible, skilled, and a great pleasure to work with.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent between $500,000–$1 million.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started around June 2021 and the engagement is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Devetry has consistently achieved our goal, which is to address all high-priority requests and software issues. They’ve also provided a detailed account of how their time and efforts were spent. All the task assignments that we’ve planned for their team have been completed ahead of schedule.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
We’re the ones who are managing the project, but Devetry works extremely well with our organization. They’re very responsive. We’re using an agile software development model and reach out to each other mostly through phone, email, and GitHub. There is constant communication between our team and their developers to ensure that they continue to meet our expectations in terms of the robustness, performance, and functionality of their solutions.
What did you find most impressive about them?
One thing that stands out with Devetry is their flexibility and ability to jump into challenges and assignments. Their expert, carefully developed solutions differentiate them from other providers that we’ve worked with. We’re able to rely on their skilled resource whenever we have a need.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I can’t think of anything.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Establish good communication with the Devetry team from the very beginning and provide them with as much detail as possible regarding your project and the scope of work. Involve them as an extension of your own development team because productive and collaborative exchanges between you can lead to the improvement of your technology.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I work for one of the multiple energy labs run by the Department of Energy. There, I’m the product portfolio manager, so I oversee a suite of software applications, including the design, development, and iteration of this portfolio.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We had a huge backlog, and we were trying to not just maintain the amount of work that we needed to do, but also improve the quality and speed of the work that we were doing. That work was focused specifically on web-based application development and design.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Although every project is different, we typically go through a proposal phase to determine the work. During that phase, we sometimes need technical feedback, so Devetry helps us with some of the technical requirement identification for this.
Assuming we win the project, we enter into the development phase. Devetry's team assists us with the initial phase of development, which typically is the design of the application. This might include UI/UX design and front- and backend architecting.
Ultimately, Devetry helps us write the code and do the software development, leading us up to see a new application or a new version of an application.
Besides the development, they’ve also helped us with some database architecture, cloud-based work, a little bit of client management, and some project management.
What is the team composition?
We’ve worked with up to three people from Devetry, but we ramp the team up or down depending on our needs. That team includes a full-stack developer, a frontend developer, and a UI/UX designer.
Currently, we’re actively working with just one of their developers, but we’re about to bring in a second person.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
Devetry had already established a subcontract relationship with our lab, so we got connected with them through another of our teams. They had had a good experience working with them and suggested that, given the ebb and flow of our portfolio, they would be a good company to work with to help us with the ups and downs of our backlog.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them at some point during the Q1 of 2020, and our engagement is ongoing. We’re very happy with what they’ve provided us.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Since having Devetry join, we’ve had a 100% satisfaction rate on all of our projects. We’ve met all the deadlines of our contractual requirements and period of performance timelines. We’ve also completed 8–9 new applications and major revisions to applications, and the level of quality and consistency of our work has increased significantly.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
Although I mentioned that they’ve helped us with some project management, we usually have in-house project management. However, in their roles, Devetry has been great. They’ve definitely contributed nicely to all of our active projects, and they work well with our project managers.
They’ve integrated really well with our structure and work methodology. We’ve touched base with them during our morning standup meetings, where we discuss plans and adjustments to schedules. Occasionally, we touch base with Devetry's leadership as well.
They’ve also contributed back; they’ve given us their feedback, and we’ve implemented it. We have constant ongoing communication, and it has worked really well.
We mainly communicate via video conference over Microsoft Teams. We’ve also exchanged direct messages and had individual calls with their team members.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Devetry’s flexibility and empathy differentiates them from other providers. They quickly understood the bureaucratic challenges with the way that our funding works, and they’ve focused on building a long-term partnership with us rather than accommodating short-term contractual requirements.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I don’t have any constructive feedback for Devetry. Most of the issues that have occurred, which have been very few, have been related to our backlog of work.
My only comment is that I hope that they can remain flexible and continue to provide active guidance in their consultant role to help us and others improve — they’re really good at that.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Really try to engage with them and have a lot of communication. It’s easy to treat contractors as people who are just there to do what you told them to do. However, I’ve felt that we’ve got a lot of value from Devetry from having them immerse our team.
Additionally, be open to feedback, suggestions, and critique. They’ve provided us with a lot of good feedback, and they have really skilled people that have helped us improve and adjust our methodologies. They bring a different perspective outside of our organization.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CTO of an advertising technology platform. We have software that allows advertisers to buy media in a self-serving fashion.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We were upgrading our application to go into a more modern tech stack, so we needed more developers to help us with that.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Devetry uses React to work on front and backend development. Adding on to that, their CTO and other senior developers provide architectural support.
What is the team composition?
My main point of contact is Brett (Founder & CEO). We also have two more people assigned to our team.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
Brett and our VP of product knew each other. I was looking for a boutique-type company so that our business would be meaningful to them. Devetry was small enough while also being very good technically, so I chose them.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent about $200,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in November 2020, and it’s ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The feedback coming from my development team is that the people Devetry brings in have been very skilled, capable, and top contributors to the project.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
We embedded them into our development team, making it easier to do daily scrums and screen plannings. We use Linear as our project management tool. We also have a weekly meeting with their leadership team to deal with more strategic issues.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their ability to get things done and the quality of their team members have been most impressive. We wouldn’t be working with them if they couldn’t deliver on their promises. They’ve contributed a great deal to our success.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Early on, we needed to scale up the teams, and there was a bit of a lag sometimes to get new team members. After they got acquired, that changed, and they were able to address those issues.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
I’d encourage technology leaders to think about a one-team model in which contractors are folded in and treated as employees. That will ensure better collaboration and ownership of the project.

Custom Software Dev for University Organization
"They’ve helped bring our vision to life, but remain realistic about what can and can’t be done."

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the creative design lead for Education for Humanity at Arizona State University. We offer a range of educational programs to refugees around the world.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We wanted to create an online learning management system (LMS) portal for a global audience, many of whom are in low-resource settings and aren’t particularly digitally literate or well-versed in the English language. The portal was intended to pull from multiple LMS interfaces, be accessible to all, deliver and house shareable credentials, and enable automated program management for scalability purposes.
What was the scope of their involvement?
My team is extraordinary lean, so they’ve helped with the initial design, business analysis, project management, web development, QA, troubleshooting, and post-development work. They’ve also helped us to coordinate project management and integration with our third-party LMS hosting company.
For the design portion of the project, they’ve helped in multiple ways. Their team came to us to help put together a human-centered approach to the project. They wanted to be in-tune with the needs of the end-users, so we worked together to figure out how to best design the system for the intended audience.
The final portal was a custom software solution. Aside from integrating the LMS interfaces, they’ve also added in single sign-on compatibility, English language diagnostic capabilities, automated badging for course completion, and a back-end administration platform.
What is the team composition?
The team composition has changed over time. We’ve worked with five people very closely throughout the project, with three more coming into focus in some of the different project stages.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
Other people at the university whole have undertaken high-profile initiatives spoke highly of them.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $150,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We first engaged with them in mid-to-late 2017. The engagement is ongoing, with several versions being released. We’ve gone months between working together in some cases, but we’ve always been in touch with them during these gaps.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We haven’t been tracking specific metrics related to this engagement, but the solution they’ve delivered has driven tangible efficiency increases. Since my team is so lean, we want the portal to act as a program manager and handle a lot of the work my team previously handled manually. In that sense, it doesn’t just help the learners access education more easily, but it also automates administrative tasks such as user registration, course enrollment, and badging.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
They’ve handled the project management for us, picking up the slack when we lost our own project manager. They use their own tools as well as regular check-in meetings. We communicate over Slack and email outside of these meetings.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re able to do what they say they’re going to do. They’ve helped bring our vision to life, but remain realistic about what can and can’t be done. Everyone on their team is a pleasure to work with.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, there’s nothing they could improve upon or do differently.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Call them and get to know them. See what they can do for you.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the director of product at Apto. We build workflow solutions for commercial real estate brokers.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We’re building a data-loading tool to move massive amounts of property and market data into a CRM. Our in-house team didn’t have the experience needed to plan and execute the project, so we reached out to the Devetry crew.
At the same time, we were rebuilding our engineering team and Devetry acted as an advisor to help us devise a hiring strategy.
What was the scope of their involvement?
They used React to upload flat files while following an extract, transform, load (ETL) process.
They also worked with Apex because they did some Salesforce work, serial peripheral interface (SPI) for deployments, and APIs.
After development, they helped us create a hiring strategy. During the discovery phase, they interviewed me and a few others in the company to understand what our goals were. At that point, they put together a report on their findings and recommended what skills we should be looking for in potential candidates. They also analyzed technology trends and informed us about what positions and skill sets are difficult to fill.
Finally, they helped us with the interview process. They reviewed the skill-check part of the review process.
What is the team composition?
I worked with about eight people in total. We talked to Stephanie (Business Analyst), developers, and some UI/UX resources.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
Our CEOs met through a business group a few years ago. So, when we began looking for a partner, we asked them if they did this kind of work. We brought them on for a fairly small project at first and it went really well so we continued to work with them.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $250,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them in May 2020 and completed the project in December 2020.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Our partnership was a wild success. Since the data-loading tool was launched, about 50% of our customers have been able to upload their data on their own. Now that we don’t have to hold their hands through the process, our team has significantly more time. As a result, we’ve been able to increase the team’s capacity so they can build automated flows and Python scripts that they didn’t have time to do before. We were also able to avoid hiring more people for that team.
Additionally, the new solution saved time for our customers. Before this project, it could take up to two weeks for our customer’s data to be uploaded, but now we can upload it within an hour.
Finally, their support in the hiring process helped us bring on a qualified team.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
I didn’t have to worry about them because I always knew what was going on. Their entire team used Clubhouse.io to manage tickets. Although Stephanie was our main point of contact, we also utilized a Slack channel to ask questions and get direct responses from their team.
Once a week we had an hour-long meeting to sort through their progress. At that time, they presented demos and review their work. Our in-house lead engineer also did code reviews with their team, which ensured a good hand-off when the project was done.
The process was a little different for the staffing project — I spoke to my main point of contact about three times a week and they spoke with more people on my team the following week. The week after that, we met for a couple of hours to review their findings and recommendations. What did you find most impressive about them?
They ramped up really quickly. Within a week, they started development. In comparison, other companies I’ve worked with have taken as much as 2–3 sprints over the course of 4–6 weeks to get up to speed.
Are there any areas they could improve?
There were a few times when they tried to work with our team on the UI/UX and that didn’t go as smoothly. Still, they had the flexibility to try it out. They’re more effective in other areas and should focus on that.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
New clients should open channels for communication and treat people as part of the company. By welcoming them to the team, they will be able to have productive conversations that are critical to the success of the project.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
I work in a university’s online department, where we run all of our online degree programs as well as other tech-enabled projects or digital learning initiatives. I’m the senior director of enterprise response and implementation.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We contacted them to create a tool to help students determine which degrees and careers would be best aligned to their interests. The technology was for marketing and student support.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We first needed their help with business analysis support, gathering requirements, and serving as a liaison between functional and technical teams. From there, they were primarily responsible for doing the coding and development work. They focused on revamping the backend and UI/UX. We launched the first phase of the project and our planning for our second phase to go live in the spring of 2021.
What is the team composition?
We worked with about eight different people, but our main points of contact were the lead developer and business analyst involved. There were designers and developers who we interfaced with on occasion, but communication was generally funneled through our main contacts.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
We engaged their CEO for a different project before he started Devetry. Previous work with him was successful, so they were highly recommended when I was starting this project. They had already gone through an RFP and were trusted vendors within our system, so we had executive approval for all development work.
How much have you invested with them?
Our total spend will be around $1 million once the project is complete.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’ve been working with them since August 2019.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We started with a vision of what the project should look like, and they did a great job of following requirements, staying in touch with stakeholders, and getting approval. There were a lot of people with buy-in on the tool, but their designs earned positive feedback from just about everybody. Everyone is impressed by the tool and the major improvements in speed, UI/UX, and access to data.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
The goal was to launch the tool this fall, which they were able to accomplish. We had an internal project management team that took the lead on scoping and requirements. However, they made sure that their communication and documentation were stellar. There was some scope creep in our effort, and they’ve been accommodating in delivering the solution we expect despite that.
We communicate through Zoom. Prior to the pandemic, they visited our facilities every few weeks. For quick communication throughout the day, we rely on Slack. We message each other daily.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re professional and build strong relationships that make us feel like a unified team. Our opinions matter to them, and they make us feel like a top priority. Their ability to meet deadlines has been hugely important to us.
We have tons of requirements, expectations, and necessary technical integrations, and they’ve always met or exceeded expectations. I’m always impressed by how well they understand the education space, especially from a development perspective.
Are there any areas they could improve?
We’ve been so pleased with them across all of our projects together.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Setting up communication channels right from the start is important. Once the line of communication is there and they understand requirements, they’re set up to do a phenomenal job.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
I am the director of a charter school. We are a homeschool hybrid program where some students are learning on-site and some are learning remotely, all of which need to be captured on a website.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We needed help with custom software development. We already had a ColdFusion program before and we had several programmers work on it. It had been added onto in a lot of different codes and it was really starting to act up because of all of the different pieces that we had plugged into it.
We decided to start from scratch and rewrite a whole new platform so our users would be able to navigate schedules, attendance, report work, and determine if funding requests have been paid. It has a wide variety of functions that we were looking for a website to do.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We needed a way for all parents in our program, which is about 400 students, to be able to document the work that they do every single day and then to be able to capture that work in reports that we could submit to the state. Since we don’t have students on-site, we can’t rely on the typical classroom to see if a student is present. This system provides a way to track attendance, compile reports, track funding, and facilitate communication between the students and our staff.
I really liked the way they went about it. They're in Denver and we're in Grand Junction, so they brought a team out here to spend a day with us talking about the different components we needed. After that, we scoped out what could do in a year, and what we would have to add on in later phases. They spent a lot of time trying to understand what we do and what we needed from our new platform.
We then determined what it would actually look like for all our different users. Then they worked on the backend and tried to make the functionality work for all those pieces. The whole backend was built around Salesforce which they used for the main structure.
They have to connect with our school district's mainframe and they had to find a way to import the information from our whole school district into our site. They had to figure out how to extract the data from the district platform and format it for our platform while ensuring that we remained connected to the district platform. This way, if someone changed information, such as their address, it would change in the system.
The last step we did was load all of the student data onto the platform, including 400 current students, and 800 alumni.
What is the team composition?
We mostly worked with three people on a regular basis. Leia (Business Analyst) oversaw the whole communication patterns and then Ben (Developer) did the vast majority of the programming. There was another person who did all of the mock-ups and all the frontend stuff.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
My assistant director conducted a really wide search from Salt Lake City to Denver, but we wanted to stay within the state if we could. She narrowed down the list to six people and then we sent an RFP to each of them. Four of them got back to us, and we went to interview them.
We drove to Denver to meet with two of them and then also met with one locally. We asked some questions and talked through the details of what we needed.
We chose Devetry because they were the best ones to deal with a project this big and see it through to the end. We knew that this was a complicated project and we needed a partner who could do the entire thing from scratch.
How much have you invested in them?
I am pretty sure it is between $150,000–$200,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We signed our contract and actually started working with them in March 2019. We launched the website in July 2020.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Various staff members and families have said that they think the new program is way more intuitive and easier to work with.
To be fair, we have people that are still struggling with it because they're less familiar with the technology. But even our more technically-challenged staff members are really beginning to realize that the layout is simpler and it's easier to find things.
Yesterday a staff member discovered the reports button, and she said it was super easy to use and very helpful. It provides information that they didn’t have before. As they explore it and get comfortable with it, they are liking it.
Anecdotally, we have roughly 100 new students every year. These are people who don’t know what we do and then they are trying to figure out how to do it on a website, especially found it very easy because they weren’t trying to compare it to the old one.
We didn’t have to do a lot of training or troubleshooting to get everyone up to speed on the platform. Once people were able to access the platform, it was pretty easy for them to understand what they needed to do and move onto the next thing without getting lost in it. Overall, we are really, really happy about that.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
We were particularly impressed with project management. They kept really good notes and were good at going back and reviewing them if needed, which kept everything on track.
It was a big undertaking, but after we had that initial meeting, we had phone calls, and sprint reviews every two weeks. At each meeting, they gave us an idea of what they were doing and what they were about to work on. They had a big spreadsheet to show us how that all fit together and what would work at what times.
Once a week we would meet to look at what they had done and talk through how things were working. It was long and painful at times because there is a ton of detail and there were things that would come up as we went.
They really did a good job of sifting through all of our requirements and determining if they were within the scope of our project. They did a really good job of sticking to what we all had originally said we needed and then moving stuff off when we realized it was too complex for what we were doing for our first year.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I was impressed by their dedication to good communication, meeting regularly, and answering questions. They ensured that everyone was able to participate and feel heard and that our needs were met.
We've had difficulty communicating with other developers in the past, but Devetry has been really responsive when something doesn't work right. They're able to look at a problem and either fix it or show us how to troubleshoot the issue.
Especially during the first stage when we had more challenges, they weren't defensive and didn't blame us. It's a tough time for us because we have hundreds of students and staff members trying to learn the site. It is all happening at once and it is pretty crazy.
Devetry handled that well and were understanding. They put everything in a big spreadsheet, and it was easy for us to get answers. We didn’t get everything we wanted, and they were realistic about the changes we wanted. They were very diligent in making sure that the final product resulted what we agreed to in the scope.
Are there any areas they could improve?
We were tripped up on the whole funding part of the program. We didn't understand how deep the funding issue was and how many other things it affected. For a while, they were trying to give fairly simplistic solutions to a pretty complex situation. As a result, we need them to redo part of the program.
The funding form doesn't save, so it has to to be completed and submitted in one go. If users make a mistake or stop and come back to it, they have to start again. It was just an oversight and we should have thought of that as well. They could have spent more time trying to understand how complex that task was before trying to design it.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Be super upfront and open about what your needs are. Diving into the details and explainging why you need certain things is well-worth the time. Don’t expect them to read your mind, but spell out exactly what you need and let them figure out how to make that work.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I work for an initiative at Arizona State University (ASU) called Education for Humanity. We offer university preparation and language courses, as well as other university-level courses to refugee learners in eight countries. I’m the assistant director.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
We hired them to build a portal for us so that our learners can have one central location from which to access all of the courses.
We initially wanted the portal to be a one-stop-shop for everything that refugees wanted to know, but as time went on, we realized that we were best positioned to offer courses because we’re a university.
What was the scope of their involvement?
In the beginning, we had design sessions so that Devetry could understand the population and the level of digital literacy the users would have. They then created a learning management system (LMS) with single sign-on capability.
Our courses are in Open edX, so the team had to work with the company to get that integrated into the portal.
What is the team composition?
We’ve worked with a lot of their staff over the course of our time with them, including their CEO and four other teammates during our design sessions. In the latest phase, we worked with a project manager and two other teammates.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
They were recommended to us by another department at ASU, so they came highly recommended.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent between $50,000–$100,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’ve worked with them on an ongoing basis over a few years, but we’ve had some starts and stops along the way because we were a new initiative and had to do a lot of pivoting. This particular project lasted from September 2019–February 2020. We’ve finished the work and are now rolling it out with our learners.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We’re working with them to enhance some of the portal work. We knew that the integration of the English language test would be difficult because not everyone needs to take it. So we’re currently revisiting how we can overcome this issue.
The team is very patient with us, even though we sometimes vacillate on the way forward. Devetry is always eager to help us understand what they are doing and the implications associated.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
Their project management is great. Devetry always meets their deadlines and has enough staff to meet our needs. They allocate their staff very well, so we never feel like we’re in a queue with them.
They have leveraged a lot of resources to spend quality time with us at ASU. We’re not communicating with them much at the moment because the project has slowed down, but they talk with our creative design lead almost daily.
The team is always flexible if timelines need to change, and they’re communicative if they can’t meet at a certain time. We have a Slack channel with them, and they always respond to us right away.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Devetry’s team members’ personalities are great. They’re very easy-going and a joy to work with.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I have no suggestions. The team is very consistent, and we know what we’re going to get from them. We’re always very pleased.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Devetry is very interested in knowing your users, so have a good idea of your target audience. One of their strengths is spending a lot of time on the frontend after understanding who will benefit from your services so that they can tailor it in the best way.

Advisory Workshop & UI/UX Design for Innovation Startup
“They’re doing a great job of leading us through the process, and they’ve been easy to work with.”

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a product manager at Vation Ventures, and we do events consulting. We have a platform that connects innovators and the market, and I oversee the development of the platform.
What challenge were you trying to address with Devetry?
My company initially engaged Devetry for advisory services.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We’ve engaged Devetry a couple of times. The first was for a workshop to unpack the potential of the platform. We had a ton of ideas on which direction to take our product, and Devetry walked us through the process of pulling out all of our ideas, developing a strategy, and creating a clear roadmap for the next iteration of our product.
Since the beginning of November, we’ve engaged them to help redesign our platform. This entails UI/UX design and enhancing existing features and functionalities. We’re redesigning the way search works, implementing a new dashboard that will roll up a lot of the functionality that we have on the site today, and going through every page of the platform and giving it a completely new look and feel while also focusing on the user experience and usability. Logan (UI Designer, Devetry) is doing the full design of the reskin of the platform. Much of the brainstorming and decisions happen on our side, while they work with us and provide a lot of mockups.
What is the team composition?
We work closely with Logan, who has been great. We’re also working with Allan (CTO, Devetry) and Stephanie (Business Analyst, Devetry), who is helping us think through some of the functionality. From what I understand, they can bring in more people as needed.
How did you come to work with Devetry?
One of our partners found Devetry, and I believe he was recommended to them by one of his peers.
What is the status of this engagement?
Our workshop was in May 2019, and then we started working closely with them on the redesign in December 2019. The engagement is ongoing and should continue for at least the next six months.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
It’s been awesome working with them. You can tell that they’re really thinking about our business problems and how to solve them. Our scope has changed considerably throughout the process, so them always being flexible and eager to take on bigger challenges has been really valuable.
We’re still in the early stages and haven’t really begun implementing it yet, but based on all of the feedback that we’ve gotten from some of our partners and customers, everybody is really excited about getting the new UI. The platform will be a lot smoother for our users.
How did Devetry perform from a project management standpoint?
They’ve been excellent and on top of it. They’re doing a great job of leading us through the process, and they’ve been easy to work with. They’ve been really responsive. We mainly communicate via email, and we also do quite a few Zoom meetings. They use a program to show us their mockups.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They do a really good job of listening to our needs and doing the best they can to really identify and solve the problem.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I’m not sure I can come up with an improvement. They’ve been great.
Any advice for potential customers?
If it’s a workshop engagement, be ready to answer a lot of questions. They really like to dig in and get into the details. Be willing to collaborate.
Thanks to this collaboration, the client was able to establish the workflow for the app and gain a better understanding of their market. DEPT® (formerly Devetry) communicated consistently through various messaging platforms, and they leveraged their technical expertise to ensure every meeting was truly productive.
