BACKGROUND

I consulted for a publishing company producing award winning print assets, industry events, and research. I was responsible for finding a development team to achieve our goals.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

We needed to develop integration tools to connect incoming data from our marketing platform, Hubspot, to a client's ERP, so that they could receive everything they need in real time from our tools.

This tool needed to be developed using node JS technology and auto-sync in real time. We also needed a web-portal dashboard that would allow us to view our analytics and trends. We need to connect to the third party's API [application program interface] integrations for data validation. We wanted the solution completed and functioning in 8 weeks or less.

SOLUTION

The Debut Infotech team has experience working with Hubspot's API, so it was easy for them to quickly understand our needs and to make a development plan and components list for the project.

I learned of them through a friend.

We began with simple email correspondence regarding the needs of the project and some of the requirement details. They were responsive and helpful in thinking through the project, and helped us understand our own needs better through these preliminary discussions. They then asked us further questions and were able to get us a project proposal soon after our responses.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

The budget was less than we anticipated and the quality of service was higher than we expected. Debut Infotech accommodated us in every way possible, and exceeded my expectations in quality of deliverables, clarity of communication, and timing.

I think Debut Infotech is unique in that, not only do they have excellent technical capacity in software development, but they have easy communication and a highly reliable customer focused business process. Our company is a consulting firm that provide solutions to small and medium size businesses to increase the use of technology and automate their business processes.

We wanted to create a mobile app for our client that can replace the existing  paper menu with tablets. One of our clients is one of the biggest laundry companies in Australia. Due to limited in-house technical capabilities, the client sought a qualified technology partner to develop and deploy automated processes to increase the efficiency of their business.

SAAVI was working on the back end solution while Debut Infotech worked on the mobile app for this project. The back end of the app is Asp.net with MSSQL server back-end, leveraging third party APIS. The Debut team was responsible for developing the iOS and Android app. It was very important to develop the solution in mobile apps efficiently and sync with the server side. What business challenge were you trying to address with Debut InfoTech?

We were working for a plumbing and heating business. They'd been in business for forty to fifty years and were using pen and paper for operations. As they grew, they started experiencing challenges keeping up with invoicing, work orders and so on. They consumed many resources trying to address this.

We were contacted in order to find a solution for streamlining their fieldwork. They wanted their employees to be able to track inventory on field, since there was a lot of miscommunication with their warehouse. This led to a couple of bad reviews.

We did an analysis on what we could do to automate their operations and came up with an iPad app that allowed them to do invoicing and check information. Their inputs would be sent to the company headquarters, and managers could see an overview of the company's workings.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail.

Debut Infotech developed the iPad application, including the backend functionality necessary for tracking information centrally. This included features like tracking emails, working hours and so on.

How did you come to work with Debut Infotech?

We came across them through oDesk. They showed me past projects they'd worked on which were similar to our needs. When going through the requirements discussions, Debut Infotech made useful suggestions about what approaches we could have on certain elements. They went out of their way to ensure the development of the best version of our product.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The total cost was between $30-40,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The development process took six months to complete.

Could you share any feedback from this engagement?

Our client had a three month acclimation period with the software. After that time, they gained a good grasp of it and ultimately hired two more technicians to keep up with the increased business.

Debut Infotech’s software gave us better ideas than those we originally had, which led to a product that completely satisfied the client.

They're completely involved in the creative process. Also, once they set a price, if any unexpected issue arrives, they won't nickel-and-dime us. They stuck to the price and went out of their way to make sure that we and the client were satisfied.

Debut built the back end solution API [application program interface] and developed the iOS app that I designed. The back end of the app is in Laravel/PHP with MySQL database and the app is written in objective c.

In the future, we will collaborate to develop the Software-as-a-Service structure for a web-platform extending Cropdots tools to larger operations.

I found the company through Upwork. Debut had the talent and flexibility to take charge of many aspects of the project. They were very responsive and efficient. The overall scope for Debut was development, hosting, and support.

Not really. It was frustrating to work with them. They said great they had designers on hand but in the end, they actually hired a consultant from Russia and his designs were sub par. We eventually updated and created new designs ourselves.

How did you select this vendor?

Places like Clutch had good reviews but now I’m skeptical becausE they did a horrible job. I wouldn’t recommend Debut if they were the last developers on this planet. I’d rather figure it out myself.

Describe the project in detail.

I’ve been contemplating for about 6 months whether I wanted to write a review about Debut Infotech. Verdict—- please save your money and time and don’t work with them. As individuals, they are all nice and friendly. We worked with Debut from July 2017 to March 2019. They initially quoted us 13 weeks for Android development but it kept extending and extending. What was supposed to be completed November 2017 didn’t actually complete until March 2019.

We had many troubles along the way. Once they fixed one problem, they seemed to break another. This was the cycle. It was so frustrating that we actually went to Chandigarh to meet the team in person in March 2018, but it didn’t help at all. In fact, after our in person meeting, everyone was optimistic that we would release the first build of our app but that didn’t happen until one year later.

Around August 2018, we accidentally stumbled upon a big issue. Debut was and currently is careless with security. They store everything in Google Drives and it’s shared publicly. What do I mean by publicly? I mean the APIs of several companies was shared with us and they didn’t even know.

Debut creates a shared Google account so that we could access the admin page but they didn’t treat that account as shared. We had APIs for about 10 other companies.

One of the things that I distinctly remember was trouble with translations. We needed to translate our app to a different language and even though we gave all the translations to Debut, they still seemed to get it wrong. It looked like they resorted to Google Translate despite our warnings not to.

It’s been more than 6 months since we discontinued working with Debut but we are still finding bugs. Our users are suffering because of the quality of work that Debut provided.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

No. Not recommended at all. We’re upset that we didn’t leave when we saw the first warning signs. If they don’t meet a deadline, don’t continue. Just find different developers.

Because Debut wasn’t able to keep their deadlines, our business suffered tremendously. We were constantly marketing for planned releases but since they could never meet their deadlines, we were not able to meet the customer’s demands and user adoption was low.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Not at all. During the process, they said that they would be proactive but they never once made it on time to a meeting, their internet always cut out while we were Skyping with them, and they never made a deadline. If you’re considering Debut, please don’t even bother.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Nothing. I’m was impressed by their lack of skill.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Communication, delivery, basic coding skills, design, .... everything. Do not work with a Debut under any circumstance. I’m saying this because I don’t want other startups to suffer like we did.

Please take the time and do research to find another company. We almost sued them because of their security breach. They were and continue to share other clients proprietary information. Your app will not be safe with them.

The vendor responded on September 18th, 2019.

This client had been unreasonable with us from the very start.

  1. Even after signing up of a formal agreement and scope document, he kept on increasing the project scope. We tried to accommodate as much as we could, but at some point, we had to say no.
  2. Design UI/UX was not part of the agreed scope since we told him that we don’t have the capability to produce high-quality designs like the one he desires. He asked for our recommendation for designers, and we introduced him to the Russian designer (the one he is referring to in his review). 
  3. The client negotiated with the Designer for his work and paid him directly. We were not even involved in any design-related process.
  4. He did come down to Chandigarh and had a pleasant stay with us for a few days. He met the team, discussed the project status, and we defined the future road map accordingly. 
  5. At no point did he express any discontent with the way things were moving. He did ask us for additional functionality to be included but was not willing to pay a fair price for it. So, we both agreed that we will leave out the additional functions for now and stick to the originally agreed scope.
  6. Regarding the security breach and the Google Drive incidence, it was simply test data and not the live one. It was placeholder data to test out the APIs and some functions.

Debut Infotech was discovered as a result of online research focused on cost competitiveness and previous work. The ability to partner for a long-term engagement and a reduction in the learning curve are underlying objectives expected from this service provider.

We ended the engagement in June 2017 but we hope to work with them on upgrades in the future.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Debut Infotech showed the right temperament and quick learning throughout the systems development life cycle. They were committed, met the scope, delivered within expectations, and course corrected with ample agility when advised.

The Android app was successfully delivered and uploaded on the Google Play Store for global download. We’re in very early stages, as the launch is barely a month old. Our marketing strategies have just started producing results and any objective evaluation would be premature. Signs are undoubtedly positive, though.

Debut Infotech’s ability to go beyond service terms and engage in value-added services shows promising intent for long-term engagement. This is a valuable thing for us and our product.
