BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder of a software company. When we started the company, we primarily did custom business application and database development projects for companies in the Boston area. Over the years, we’ve shifted our focus to SaaS for class-based businesses, like dance studios and afterschool programs.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Corpitech?

We began working with some of Corpitech’s staff members before Corpitech existed. In 2001 or 2002, we were looking to augment our staff. We had some database and app development projects and needed more support.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Corpitech handles the majority of our development work and some QA. The main technologies that they work with are Microsoft SQL Server, ASP.NET, and C#. I come from a software development background, as does another principal in our company, but we don’t do hands-on development as much anymore; we work on the requirements, the design, and architecture issues, while Corpitech does the development.

What is the team composition?

It’s varied a bit over time, but we currently have two full-time developers and one QA person. One of the developers is more senior, and we hired another in the last year or so to grow the team and be able to get through more work.

How did you come to work with Corpitech?

I posted in an online job forum. We began working with Corpitech’s founder Vadzim (CEO, Corpitech) when he was affiliated with another company, and we continued to work with him when he formed Corpitech. We've been with them through many different iterations of their business setup.

What is the status of this engagement?

Although we began working with Vadzim many years ago, Corpitech was formed in July 2015. Our work together is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

At a high level, we’ve been working with them for a long time. We’re happy with the service they’re providing.

How did Corpitech perform from a project management standpoint?

We do most of the project management on our side. Corpitech doesn’t have any direct client-facing roles; they interface with us, and my company interfaces with clients. Overall, I’d say communication is good. All of our communications are written; we don’t use Skype, email, or anything like that. We have our own internal tool to track requirements and discussions related to requirements. This is a process and approach that has worked well for us over the years. Corpitech has been good about always participating in discussions.

It’s always a challenge for any developer to make accurate estimates. I think it really comes down to the people on the team; if you’ve got good people, you get good results. Our success depends on their ability to provide good people, and they’ve ultimately done a good job.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve formed a partnership over the years. During ups and downs, we’ve tried to support each other. The flexibility on the part of the ownership to create a partnership where each side is benefiting and supporting the other has been important. At the end of the day, I like and trust them as a team. They’re involved in all of our major technology efforts, and we trust that they’re going to use our intellectual property and information responsibility.

Any advice for potential customers?

I think some companies who are looking to grow might not want to deal with managing a development team, but that’s not an approach that would work well for us. In my experience, you need to have that oversight and internal project management to avoid going down the wrong paths.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the vice president of information technology for a healthcare group.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Corpitech?

We needed a partner to augment our internal development team and develop several internal applications.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Corpitech has been involved in building desktop and web applications for our team to use internally. These tools deal with everything from electronic medical records to healthcare billing. Corpitech uses .NET, C#, and Microsoft SQL servers to develop these applications. We’ve gone through several iterations and technology stacks over the years with their team.

One of the applications that Corpitech built is an electronic health record system. We use it to run the clinical side of our business, which is a mobile practice. The app works offline and uses a synchronization engine that syncs its local database with our server. Corpitech built the engine to manage that two-way exchange of information as well as the rest of the backend. The app also feeds into other internal apps such as our healthcare billing system.

What is the team composition?

We work with three active developers and a QA person. One of the developers acts as a project manager as well.

How did you come to work with Corpitech?

We had worked with Corpitech back when the principals were involved in a different company. The original project development lead found them after they did a project for another nearby company. Our team continued to work with their development staff once they formed Corpitech.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve worked with Corpitech since 2015. We have an ongoing development project with them right now, and they also provide ongoing support on past projects.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Corpitech has helped speed up our development process. They regularly turn around complex pieces of code in a shorter timeframe than what our onshore team could accomplish. As our company continues to grow, we have a lot of changing needs. Their team adapts to our requests, staying up to date on the latest technologies, rewriting legacy code as needed, and meeting aggressive deadlines. Corpitech provides valuable expertise and knowledge for us—they’ve become so ingrained in our company that we don’t have to make our specifications as detailed anymore.

How did Corpitech perform from a project management standpoint?

We manage most projects on our side, but Corpitech has a point of contact that translates our requirements to their team. They handle that aspect well in terms of communicating deadlines and expectations. The team regularly meets our timelines and deliverable standards, which speaks to their skill at managing projects.

We have weekly calls through Skype and otherwise communicate through email. All requirements and jobs are put into a project management tool that we share.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Corpitech delivers high-level code that gets our requirements right on the first try. We rarely have to go back and modify their work. Their ability to turn around projects in a quick timeframe is important to us. They’re also not afraid to recommend approaches that we haven’t considered, and that might work better for our project. We see Corpitech as senior members of our development team.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything. Corpitech is based in Belarus, but we have someone who speaks Russian and can communicate things to their team as needed. Email communication works well. We often have pretty hard deadlines, but we trust Corpitech to let us know if they can make it or not. For the most part, they make it and ask questions as required.

Any advice for potential customers?

As with any software development project, scope out the project as much as possible from a design and database standpoint. This is especially important if you’re working on current systems or if the project requires a lot of knowledge transfer to take place. Document as much as possible as well to make virtual meetings seamless.
