Project Foodie Image

Project Foodie

Project Foodie is a unique app that guides users through real-time cooking instruction. Meals start with a preview that shows an overview of the process from prep to mise en place. The app displays a list of ingredients, list of tools, and step-by-step written instructions. Users can select different serving sizes for each meal, and the ingredient quantities automatically scale. This required some very heavy lifting,

due to the need to comply with the customary units of measurement required for cooking, such as teaspoon to tablespoon conversions, and multiples of units such as “pinch” and “sprig.”

We created a comprehensive backend management system that also allowed the app to update quantities inside the written step-by-step instructions, as well as the on-screen events that guide the users through the cooking process. The app also contains a set of dynamic timers that display on the video when tapped, but also exist independent of the video - so, if a user has to leave the app, they will receive a system alert that the timer is done!

It has been featured in The Hollywood Reporter and on NBC New York. It is also an Apple App Store Editors' Choice.

Musea

This ClearSummit project came about after we worked on apps for several museums. We saw that there was a huge overlap in features, and decided to create a one-size-fits-most, turnkey app that could get museums up and running on their own custom app quickly.

We started by defining user personas and writing user stories, keeping in mind that a universal application needed to be able to do a lot of things for a lot of

people. We made sure to streamline the features so that users who wanted to dig deeper into information were able to, but those who wanted a more superficial experience didn’t feel bogged down.

We wanted neutral branding, with an interface that got out of the way of the content - we knew that the museums’ content needed to be front and center in the user’s experience. The designs made room for visual imagery to be selected by the member museums, and allowed them to maintain their own branding within the Musea app.

We used our working knowledge of user-friendly backend systems to make the app intuitive for the museum employees who might not be the most tech-savvy. During interviews with museum personnel, we came to the realization that the people in charge of putting together new educational projects were often very time-constrained as well. We developed an easy drag-and-drop interface for the backend with a lot of visual components so that the administrators would be able to put the app together in just a few hours.

Lightghost Image

Lightghost

We were thrilled when our client for this project, a successful film director, came to us with his work in progress. He and two friends had been working to create a way to use bright light and an iPhone camera to create “light drawings” similar to the way a DSLR camera is able to capture moving light. They needed to iterate on the underlying light-drawing video technology, and find ways to process the video after it is

created.

We created playful, colorful designs that would appeal to a wide range of ages. The app needed to be as enticing to an 8 year old as a 50 year old. We also wanted to find ways to help the users develop more skill and confidence, as well as the ability to gamify the light-drawing experience. We iterated on different ways to show the user brush options, and ultimately the client wanted the brush selector to feel like opening a palette of watercolors. There are 5 different light brushes, and 9 different colors to choose from.

The app can be used in a “freestyle” manner wherein the user can just use a flashlight to start drawing in the air. Users can also select “Tracing Paper”, which superimposes simple line drawings on the screen that can then be traced to create an image. The app allows import of images from the camera roll that are also displayed so that they are easily traceable.

There are two games in the app - one geared for one person to use and the other for 2 to 4 players.

The app allows a one-time purchase to open additional recording time, two additional colors, and two additional brush styles.

Phyn is the brainchild of Belkin and Uponor. Phyn is a smart water assistant that monitors your home's plumbing 240 times per second and alerts you of any anomalies.

ClearSummit built the first prototype for Phyn in 2016. From there, we have integrated with their team and are building the consumer-facing platform for their launch.

ClearSummit also supported Phyn by building a React-Native app for iOS and Android

using a development foundation of best practices, continuous integration and delivery and provide onsite expertise at trade shows and events.
JetSpace Image

JetSpace

We were approached by two teachers from Green Dot Public Schools who had an idea for a mobile app for their school.

Green Dot had some basic designs and branding and a project outline for a very robust app. They also had a strict budget so we worked with them to define a feature set and technology stack that would accomplish their main objectives and stay within their budget.

We developed JetSpace using React

Native. This allowed us to use the same basic codebase for iOS and Android, and to branch off and write native code for areas of the app that required that accommodation. In this instance, the camera functionality required some adjustments in native languages, but the vast majority of the app used the same code for both platforms.

We designed the app using clean, crisp lines and the client’s icon and color scheme. The goal was to follow the structure of social apps we knew the students would already be familiar with - but add in some additional features: selecting assignments, points allocation, teacher accounts, and admin approval of all posts before they appear in the Feed.

We set up the backend to allow the teachers to preview the videos and photos, as well as review the student comments about their assignments before “approving” the posts. If a post is approved, the student gets points toward an internal reward system. Students can star other students’ posts, but only teachers can post public comments.

TuneRegistry is the brainchild of Dae Bogan - a music business consultant, UCLA professor, and serial entrepreneur. He partnered with music attorney Jesse Morris to create a plan to solve the fragmented and confusing problems related to music metadata and rights registrations. When Kara met Dae at SXSW V2V in 2015, it became obvious that ClearSummit would be a great addition to the TuneRegistry team.

The goal was to

guide the user through a series of forms that didn’t feel like forms, and coach them into entering all of the data necessary for their registrations in as simple and streamlined a process as possible.

As we built the platform, we saw how many of the problems we were trying to solve industry-wide are caused by inconsistent and inaccurate data being promulgated across the music industry ecosystem. We created mechanisms to standardize the information during input process, and prevent erroneous data from being sent out to the third-party exchange partners. Our system ensures that the information is formatted to the exact specifications required by each exchange, and is sent via their preferred method, including direct API integration.

The end result of many hundreds of hours of design, development, testing, and revision, is a robust and simple-looking platform that solves a major industry-wide problem. As we continue our work with TuneRegistry, we look forward to adding additional exchanges and developing our own API to allow other players in the tech side of the music industry to integrate directly with our platform.

All the new tools and systems perform flawlessly. ClearSummit impressed with their friendly relationship-building and responsive communication style. Their accessibility and expertise have increased the in-house technical team's skill and confidence.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your organization.

UltraPress is the Expedia of custom-apparel. If you want custom shirts, sweatshirts, or sweatpants done for your company, club, church group, and so on. you can go to our site and design your garment. Then, instead of getting one price back, we actually blast your order to our network of clothing screeners and you'll get six to 10 quotes based on your order. Normally, if you wanted all those quotes, you'd have to go to all those sites and submit your custom design each time, but with UltraPress, it's a one-stop shop.

What is your position?

I'm CTO at UltraPress.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with ClearSummit?

We needed help with the development operations side and increasing the sophistication of our server system that was running our site. ClearSummit helped us with that and brought plenty of great expertise. I'm proud of our system now. It's very robust. The second thing is they helped us build a more advanced version of our custom design tool so our customers have an easier design submitting the designs they want to print. It's a very sophisticated tool that was built entirely by ClearSummit.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

On the dev op side, they were able to use various features from Amazon Web Services to help efficiency of our site. On the coding side, they used Angular on the front end, and Django, which is written in Python on the back-end to build the T-shirt design tool. In addition, they helped us use a library called Django REST framework, which has made things easier for us.

How did you come to work with ClearSummit?

I actually found Shane [Zilinskas, President at ClearSummit] through an online developers' community, where he said he was available for contract work. I must have talked to 20 to 40 people and was most impressed with his combination of technical and business knowledge. I was looking to hire initially, but then it made sense to have a contract guy that you can turn off and on as needed.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

They've done several different-sized project with us. Most have been around $10,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work with Shane and his team is on and off as needed. I'd say it began around a year ago [December 2014]. Some projects take only a few days while others last a few months.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What distinguishes ClearSummit from other providers?

On top of the quality of their work, I'd say it's their responsiveness and just general demeanor that make them such a pleasure to work with.

After working with ClearSummit, my confidence in our tech staff has increased tremendously. We're more confident than ever that we can support our growing user base as time moves on because of the foundation that ClearSummit has built for us.

Is there anything ClearSummit could have improved or done differently?

I can't think of anything. I was very happy and still am. This has been the longest single relationship I've ever had with a contractor.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I was a product manager for a design and development agency based in Los Angeles.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what reason(s) did your company hire ClearSummit?

We partnered with ClearSummit for a large technology client who needed a custom IoT [Internet of Things] mobile application that needed to be implemented within an aggressive timeline. We engaged ClearSummit to complement our design and development team, allowing us to meet our time constraints for the pilot launch.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

ClearSummit’s knowledge of architecture, development, and scalability was a deciding factor in our choice to hire them.

Describe the project in detail.

ClearSummit assisted with early ideation and discovery all the way to wireframing, design, and development. They also provided external project management for our client, who needed a product owner to coordinate their resources.

The overall project lasted approximately 6–7 months, and ClearSummit continues to provide support for our client.

What was the team composition?

I worked closely with Shane [Founder & Lead Engineer, ClearSummit] for this engagement.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

They exceeded our expectations as a partner. Shipping the product on time and within budget would have been nearly impossible without their help.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Working with ClearSummit was an exceptional experience. I'd recommend them without hesitation to anyone who needs help with project execution, intelligent strategy, and true product ownership throughout the entire engagement.
