The Situation

When they first contacted Cheeky Monkey Media, the Environmental Law Institute was in need of a significant design update. Not only had the aesthetics of the web site begun to age, but the navigation of the site had become troublesome. Originally, the Drupal 6 site they were using was adequate to their needs. However, as time went on, and more information was published to the site, the

general flow and usability suffered. Articles, information, and publications were difficult to search and find, and this left ELI users with a poor browsing experience. With so much of the organization's work involving events, publications, and learning materials, it was exceptionally important for the group to get a handle on the site design and information architecture.

The Solution

Though the look and feel of the site was ELI’s primary motivation when engaging in their RFP process, it became clear in the early stages of the project that significant work needed to be initiated to organize not just the navigation, but the overall organization of topics, article types, and information. Cheeky Monkey Media set to work on a full scale card sort procedure that allowed ELI to clarify topic “buckets” that could then be used in the development of an intuitive and efficient Information Architecture. From a well-organized IA, to the completion of wireframe layouts, the strategy and user flow through the site was planned for optimal user experience. With design concepts based on solid strategy, the creative team was able to put together an engaging, professional and sleek look for the Environmental Law Institute that encouraged visitors to browse and review the site, but also locate specific information easily.

Since the completion of this project we've continued as a valued expert practitioner for their website needs:

  • We maintained and enhance their Drupal 6 site past D6 end-of-life
  • We built a Drupal 8 base install theme or upstream for their eventual Drupal 8 migration project, and used it ro quicklt spim up other Drupal 8 sites for their organization
  • We migrated the entire site and associated sites on D6 to D8

The Situation

Before the redesign, Wenco’s homepage had a bounce rate of over 50%. That means over half of their potential customers left the website before they even see anything else! That’s a big problem.

Improving their bounce rate and pages per session were the two top goals Wenco had for their new site. According to SEMRush pages per session is the third most important ranking metric on Search Engine Result Page

(SERPs), with bounce rate being the fourth most important. This meant it was paramount for us to improve those numbers.

 

The Solution

To determine the most important design decisions we developed landing pages and conducted multiple A/B tests to find the “sweet spot”. On these pages we tested copywriting styles, messaging, call to action placements, and more.

Test results in hand we could then make decisions, backed up by data, about how to use each page element to meet Wenco’s goals. We found that even tiny tweaks and subtle switches to the content could impact that number by almost 15%! Now we’re getting somewhere!

Moving forward, we used compelling visuals, intuitive navigation, and clear messaging to build a great Wenco web experience. So good, in fact, that we were able to change the bounce rate from over 50% to under 28%.

Before the redesign, Wenco’s homepage had a bounce rate of 50.15%. After the redesign, we measured a bounce rate decrease of 36.21%, with the final resulting homepage bounce rate being 27.9%.

The average number of pages viewed per session increased by 33.75%, with the average session lasting 67.14% longer than before!

Not only were we able to decrease their bounce rate, increase the pages viewed, and increase the time spent on those pages, we also decreased the average page load time by 16.2% and the average page download time by 23.1%. Now that’s efficient!

The Situation

SportMedBC is an organization comprised of sports medical and paramedical practitioners, with the mission to promote leadership, public awareness and education in sport health. Before engaging in their website redesign, the site was an amalgam of pieces that were integrated to add functionality while keeping overhead and expenses low. The result was a site that presented navigation challenges to users, and made

it difficult for staff to manage. Built on an older version of Drupal, the site had expanded far beyond the usability threshold, and it was time for a full scale renewal. The Solution

By upgrading the site to Drupal 7 and its improved administrative themes, Cheeky Monkey Media was able to alleviate many of SportMedBC’s web management issues. More than just upgrading to D7, the site saw a significant upgrade as Ubercart – a Drupal eCommerce module – was phased out in favor of Drupal Commerce, an updated and improved online shopping platform. With this in place, the site was made easier for users looking to register for courses and programs, as well as for those just seeking to purchase items.

Through the methodical application of Cheeky Monkey’s strategy & planning phases, the resulting layouts and site structure were far more in tune with SportMedBC’s audiences, while ensuring that important content and information was easy to find. At the end of the day, Cheeky Monkey Media helped SportMedBC breathe a little more life and vigor into a site that had hit the runner’s wall.

The Situation

It’s a glorious situation when a client is so happy with the Monkeys that they ask us to be part of another project. It’s even more fun when you’re able to follow up a development heavy project with one that allows the creative design team to show off their talents.

On the heels of the Drupal Job Boards project, the Drupal

Association again turned to Cheeky Monkey Media to help design the branding for the 2015 North American DrupalCon in Los Angeles. Having already impressed with pure development and programming skill, the Monkeys were more than excited to showcase their creative talent as the designer for one of the largest Drupal events of the year. The Solution

As the Drupal Association was focused on ensuring the success of DrupalCon Amsterdam, the creative design team was eager to begin initial concept development. Upon selection as the partner of choice, the Cheeky Monkey team dedicated significant time and energy to brainstorming potential themes, logos, and colors. By taking steps in advance, the Monkeys ensured that the project could really catch fire when Association staff were finally able to catch their breath.

Of course, when you’re entire corporate culture is dedicated to pushing the limits and stretching the boundaries, it was important to the team that the designs not fall back on standard Hollywood clichés and show-biz fare that Los Angeles has come to be known for.

Sfter this project we again engages with the DA to brand and develop all collateral and the website for DrupalCon 2016 and 2017.

Neither of us was here when they initially approached Cheeky Monkey to work with the organization. Our organization needed a redesign of our website who knew how to use Drupal.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

They helped redesign our Drupal website. Another challenge was that the previous site was not mobile optimized and did not have any Spanish language functionality or pages to it. Part of the redesign was to make the site mobile-friendly and to provide all of our resources and information in Spanish.

How did you come to work with Cheeky Monkey Media?

The organization's biggest requirement was that the agency we decided to work with needed to have considerable experience working with Drupal.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The first project for the redesign was a $200,000 project. Since then, we've had smaller projects that have been less than $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We are currently working with them.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

In general, our audience has expanded, and we have had a lot of traffic on some of our more specific pages. It was because of that new design and being able to access the information on a mobile device that that increase happened.

How did Cheeky Monkey Media perform from a project management standpoint?

When I first started working with Cheeky Monkey, they were going through a transition, so things were a little slow moving and communication was a bit off, but once they switched to a new project manager everything improved. Our project manager Justin has been great at paying attention to our needs and the projects. More recently, they've been getting busy, so it's been a little bit more of a slower pace again.

What distinguishes Cheeky Monkey Media from other providers?

It is very clear that Cheeky Monkey Media has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Drupal.

Is there anything Cheeky Monkey Media could have improved or done differently?

The only thing that has been a little frustrating is not being able to move forward with projects because of timing. I know they are getting a lot of new business, so it is probably difficult to manage timing. Aside from scheduling, they do good work.

I would also appreciate more insight from them into some of the new things that they're doing. We're moving forward on our projects, but it would be great to be more collaborative in terms of how we could improve our site and getting that feedback from them. I'm more used to having a more collaborative relationship with vendors where they're constantly providing ideas.

My company is the National Hemophilia Foundation. We’re a nonprofit that services people with bleeding disorders.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Cheeky Monkey Media?

The business challenge was that we have slowly been converting our proprietary content management system based websites over to open source content management systems. Our previous hosting provider built our websites on the Microsoft platform. We felt that that was what was affecting the performance of our website.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail.

Cheeky Monkey Media worked to move us onto the hosting provider Pantheon. They seem to have extensive knowledge regarding that. We reached out to Cheeky Monkey who first did an audit on our website and discovered some of the issues that were preventing us from having optimal performance. One of those issues was because the website was on a less than optimal platform, which is typically supposed to be running on an Apache UNIX. Our platform instead was built on Microsoft. They helped us convert it from Microsoft over to UNIX, and also moved us over onto Pantheon’s hosting services, and as a result, have been doing well ever since. In addition to moving two of our main websites over to Pantheon, they’ve also built a brand new website for us since we’ve known them.

How did you come to work with Cheeky Monkey Media?

I searched online for the top design agencies who have experience with Drupal and came up with Cheeky Monkey Media. We saw their past work with Drupal and could tell they were very active within that community, which is exactly what we were looking for.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It costs on average, $25,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We are currently working with them. After they did the initial work we asked for, we realized that we needed a middle man. We have them on retainer as application level support that Pantheon can’t provide.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Before we partnered with Cheeky Monkey our websites were really slow. The sites were slow for the anonymous users that are just coming to the website to read and visit pages, but they were dreadfully slow for the logged in users who are content managers of the website. Since we’ve moved on to Pantheon and converted away from Microsoft, there has been a dramatic improvement on our performance. We see at least 50 to 75% quicker load times of our pages.

We have had a huge increase in traffic. We’re seeing almost 20,000 extra users on average per month ever since we moved from a Microsoft-based environment to a UNIX-based environment.

How did Cheeky Monkey Media perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management is very good and organized. They break all their tasks up to make sure everything gets done. If we have any projects, we speak to their account manager who then looks into the project and gives us a quote and time frame. From that point forward, I work with a single person who delegates to their designers and programmers. I like that we only work with one person and that they have been consistent because they know everything about my past projects. It makes it quicker to not have to explain so much every single time I get a new project to a new person.

What distinguishes Cheeky Monkey Media from other providers?

The team at Cheeky Monkey Media is a fun group of people and are pleasant to work with. If the project is something that’s out of scope or really difficult, they’re great at explaining why it can’t be done. If it can be done, but will cost more, they are fair and upfront about it.

My experience with them has been pretty great. We don’t have a full technical staff that can continue development and management of our websites on our hosting platform – so it is nice to have Cheeky Monkey.

Is there anything Cheeky Monkey Media could have improved or done differently?

Costs are pretty fair and definitely worthwhile. We’re a nonprofit, so we can always use bigger discounts on certain things. Overall, we are happy.

They’ve been amazing. I’ve never been so pleased. I worked with another web designer before we started working with Cheeky Monkey, and I was always frustrated with the first company. Whenever I need something from Cheeky Monkey, their response is amazing. They have everything in order, organized on an Excel spreadsheet that is presented to us in a weekly meeting. As items are completed, they drop to the bottom of the spreadsheet; those that are up and coming are at the top. We’re never surprised by what’s happening. Everything is always well thought-out.

I’ve been to Cheeky Monkey's office, which is very warm and inviting. They’re all knowledgeable and extremely friendly, but always professional. They get back to me right away when I have an issue and are just great people.

The only thing I would say is that in the beginning, we were moved from one project manager to another. Because of this, it took some time to get the bugs worked out between the two. If we had been working with the same person from the start, it would have been a better initial experience.
