Introduce your business and what you do there.
I was the co-interim director and director of health promotion and chronic disease for a state health department, but I retired a few months ago. We facilitated many issues in health promotion, chronic disease management, and prevention.
What challenge were you trying to address with Berry Dunn?
First, we needed help with the state’s Bureau for Public Health accreditation process. Then, they helped us write a grant to our funders for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
What was the scope of their involvement?
While Berry Dunn put together committees that worked on the accreditation processes and requirements, I also worked on one of those committees to input what they did. Additionally, I worked on different issues, and they wrote the grant to ensure that it got written. We had many other things to do, and it was an important grant, so they did it for us.
What is the team composition?
We had two people for the accreditation project and four people for the grant.
How did you come to work with Berry Dunn?
The Bureau for Public Health had already used Berry Dunn on several different projects. As we focused on our own project, it made sense to hire them because they were very professional in their other contributions. Also, they seemed to get what we did. Overall, it was very beneficial to have them work on the grant application.
How much have you invested with them?
It’s between the range of $200,000–$999,999.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in July 2018, and it’s an ongoing partnership.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
They’re very professional. We’ve been impressed with how they handle the work — it’s understandable, and they use the proper terminology.
How did Berry Dunn perform from a project management standpoint?
They perform very well. I’m not sure how they do it, but they’re great at meeting timelines and knowing what’s required to meet them. The team knows their stuff.
They probably use project management tools on their side, but we mainly oversee the timelines together. We use emails, Zoom, Google, and phone calls for communication.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re familiar with working with state health departments. They knew what was appropriate with the accreditation, and when it came to writing, one of their staff members used to be one of the project officers for that fund, which really helped to move it along. Overall, it’s easy to rely on them because they know how our organization works and how to get the job done.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I don’t have anything at this point.
