Custom Software Development for Small Business

We develop custom IT solutions for tech startups and small businesses that require deep expertise across multiple IT fields. Our company builds MVPs, develops systems, automates business processes, and handles integration with third-party services.

70% of our clients return with new projects and stay with us 5 years on average. There is a common thread among them:

- They have projects that require a cohesive team, as opposed to a newly assembled group of developers.

- They expect flexibility in response to changing project requirements

- They find effective project management and crystal clear communications to be crucial for success

Our main strength lies in complex projects that require both experienced generalists and specialists:

- BI solutions, Unified Communications, and VoIP, Internet of Things, Big data, Machine learning, blockchain

- We use tried-and-true tech stack: Java, .Net, Python, Node.js, just to name a few

Who we are

- The team is comprised of about a hundred tech minds, who've worked together for the past 15 years

- Our Heads of Technologies are published experts with 20+ years in their fields. You can find their articles on IBM developerWorks, in Java Developer's Journal, Dr Dobb's Journal, Automated Testing Magazine, SOA World Magazine. We also contribute to open-source software projects.

Molecular Modeling Image

Molecular Modeling

Axmor software engineers were asked to create a computational tool that would take molecular data files in specific formats (mol, mol2, sdf, pdb), process them using a geometric structuring algorithm, and generate a surface file in obj format (a set of 3D-coordinates of vertices and edges). The tool also generates a file that contains numerical characteristics of the results (for example, the volumes of molecular

interpenetration, which is a quantitative measure of the difference in the geometrical location of molecules). Additionally, the existing CDKPsearch package for virtual screening using the Kabsch algorithm was improved.

Axmor Software has significantly decreased the number of bug releases over time. Their low attrition rate is unlike any the client has ever seen in comparison to other software engineers. Consistently using project management and communication tools, they update the client daily on progress.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the chief scientific officer and director of software engineering and our company develops software for decision making support. The tool allows health care professionals, doctors, and researchers to model disease progressions and treatments, and then perform it on a cost-effective analysis and various other related analyses to make the best possible decisions under circumstances. Other areas of users fall into legal domains, so making complex decisions and analyzing various litigation strategies.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Axmor Software?

We wanted a quality software engineering team that was local. Axmor was engaged to create a transition plan and implementation from older technology like a C++ based single Microsoft Windows platform to a Java-based Eclipse platform that could run on many different targets.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Axmor became a partner in that transition process and they’re responsible for project management, development, and testing. Our initial project was porting our old C++ functionality. Since then, we’ve migrated the development process to an agile development process, which took us several years to migrate toward the overall process. We release two versions per year, one in January and one in July. We try to bring a new set of features for our user base within the healthcare or legal domain.

Since we use agile development, we work with Axmor to define what we want and what the priorities are of the various features we want to release down the road. They organize the plan with their project manager and we share the plan, then development proceeds according to the prioritzed tasks within the agile framework. When we get close to the release, usually about a month out, we decide if the features are deemed stable enough to build the testing process. We decide which features are not quite ready yet and which we’re going to include with the next release.

What is the team composition?

We have three developers, one test player, and one project manager. Sometimes we may scale up the developers by adding another resource if necessary.

How did you come to work with Axmor Solutions?

My predecessor sent out an RFP to several companies and Axmor Software’s response was the most elaborated and well-prepared. My predecessor decided to give them a test assignment and their work was very impressive.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $2 million–$5 million since the start of this relationship.

What is the status of this engagement?

They began working with the company in 2008 and the relationship is currently ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

At the beginning of our relationship, we had about five bug releases. We’ve been able to decrease it over time to four and now it’s unusual that we have more than one bug release.

How did Axmor Software perform from a project management standpoint?

Jira is our daily bug release and project management tool, which works very well for us. We also use Microsoft Project typically in the early stages of planning and this is typically used by their project manager to communicate to us how projects are going. We have live Skype meetings with the entire team two times a week.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’ve been doing this for a long time and I wish I had always had a team like Axmor Software. I was able to strike a balance with Axmor Software where their management is comfortable with us giving our input on who should be included or who should be fired because they’re not doing their job. This has really worked well for us and Axmor as well. Their attrition rate is one of the lowest between the companies I’ve worked with. What I’ve experienced and had problems with when working with other companies is their attrition rates among software engineers are just incomparable. Two of the developers at Axmor Software have been with our team since 2008 and that’s precious.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Any improvements needed have been getting smaller and the main ones are fixed.

The software solution functions exceptionally well. Axmor Software has maintained a well-organized task management and communication style throughout the timeline. A detail-oriented team, they don't hesitate to ask questions to ensure they understand internal goals.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

My name is Jeremy Doyle, and I’m the director of Bluefish Retail Ltd. We are in the software retail sector, and we build apps for retailers all over the world.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Axmor Software?

We wanted to build a global system for an electronic point of sale (POS) solution. When we started, most of the POS systems were all desktop or windows based. We wanted to provide a cloud-based solution that would allow retailers all over the world to work from the same system.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They helped create a Java-based server program with a web frontend. I provided them with functional specifications, and they interpreted that into technical specifications. They did all of the development work, using Java, JavaScript, and HTML.

There were two elements to the software. There is a central server element where all customers sit on the same database (which is difficult technically because we need to achieve separation between all our customers so they don’t see each other’s data).

We also had a local store server running. Each customer would log in through our website and download the terminal software to their local machine, which would then talk to the cloud.

What is the team composition?

When the main development work was happening, we worked with three developers, a project manager, and a technical person who looked after the service. Once it was all built and up-and-running, we had ad-hoc dealings with them. They looked after the servers and worked on any bugs if needed.

How did you come to work with Axmor Software?

I did a search online and found a number of different companies. I interviewed them and asked them to prepare a technical specification for a functional piece of work. I wanted to see how accurately they would read my spec and what their communication would be like.  Amor Software came out on top.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them toward the end of 2009, and the project has started winding down in the last month or so.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

There were hardly any problems with it when we went live. Now, we get very few support calls from customers. The product is very solid, very robust. We’ve hardly had any bugs.

How did Axmor Software perform from a project management standpoint?

I was very pleased from an organizational and project management standpoint. We had an account manager with them. We also had a project manager who worked with the developers and met with them once-per-week. He would keep a high-level watch on the project.

We also had a lead developer who was the main person I spoke with. His English was immaculate, fantastic. We’d be on Skype every day.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They paid attention to detail and made sure everything was properly documented. Quite often, we’d give them the spec, they’d read through it, and then they’d have a lot of questions about it. They won’t start work until they are 100% clear with the requirements.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They’ve bent over backward for us. When we had problems in the middle of the night, they’ve been happy to help. I have nothing critical to say about them, which is why we’ve been working with them over the last 10 years.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure you 100% nail down your requirements and exactly what you want to achieve. Write down the full details and functional specs before you start. They aren’t mind readers. So, if you don’t know exactly what you’re trying to achieve, it’s going to be very difficult for them.
