The user utilizes multiple cloud technologies, but has found best results with VMware. VWware is utilized by Stratosphere Networks to leverage migrations for clients and for virtualized environments. The user prefers to utilize VMware due to its availability and features. Additionally, they speak highly of VMware's support resources.

Can you please provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

Stratosphere Networks is an IT managed service provider focused on delivering comprehensive technology services and solutions that meet and exceed the always-changing, diverse business needs for all types of industries.

I am a Senior Engineer and Virtualization Specialist.

What is the business challenge a company faces that initiates the need for this platform?

VMware was and is the leader in virtualization and distributed computing. When choosing which solution is best for my clients, I want to pursue a holistic approach and not just look at the product itself but also the ecosphere that was built around it. VMware has the best 3rd party applications and support, and is the gold standard in virtualization.

How does your company implement this platform?

We use VMware to leverage migrations and upgrades of our client’s software to either a cloud-based solution, a local install, or a hybrid of the two.

Why do you recommend that platform over other platforms?

Microsoft and Amazon are big competitors in the market, but there is a fundamental difference in how each company lets engineers use their software. For example, Hyper-V, which is Microsoft’s software to compete against VMware, is not the same Hyper-V Microsoft uses in its own datacenters for its own cloud platform (Azure). I believe that if you sell a service and an underlying software, you should “Eat your own dog food”, so to speak. Microsoft does not do this. Microsoft is always playing catch up with VMware. Microsoft’s is not as mature as VMware’s is.

If you used VMware's product at a local level, the cloud version is almost identical and you can even use the same local client to manage local servers and servers in the cloud.

Amazon uses a home brewed application based on an open source software, support is not as easy to get with Amazon.

How do the costs of utilizing this platform compare to other options?

The price is comparable to the competitors.

Were there any software features/tools that you were really impressed by?

High Availability, SAN integration, and backups are all outstanding features with VMware. Dell, HP, and IBM, all use industry standards to connect their servers to VMware, Hyper-V, and XenServer. On top of that they also spend more development time actively integrating VMware into their systems. Once again, the ecosphere is just more developed with VMware. Dell, HP, IBM, and many other companies tout their integration with VMware as a selling point.

Looking back, are there any areas of the platform that you feel could be added or improved upon?

The small market entry level price can be expensive, but as you scale up, the price drops.

Have you had to interact with the platform’s support team or reference their support resources?

Yes. Support is top notch from VMware. Hyper-V and XenServer has been open sourced, so support is hit or miss.

To sum up: We have a few quick questions, and for each question we ask you to rate the platform on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best.

What would you give the platform for functionality of the features available?

5

What would you give the platform for ease of use or ease of implementation into your business?

5

For support, as in responsiveness of the team or helpfulness of the resources available?

5

How likely are you to recommend the platform to a colleague or similar business?

5

Overall, satisfaction with the platform?

I would recommend a business to consider this service if they are in need of a secure public cloud platform that offers compute, storage, networking, and disaster recovery.

Experience

It has an easy interface and simple setup. It can seamlessly extend our data center to the cloud. We use a dedicated cloud, virtual private cloud, block storage, data protection, disaster recovery, hybrid cloud manager, and hosted infrastructure. This service has performed adequately and our company has benefited by integrating our on-premises environment. We can address business needs without changing processes, and our workload has become more portable.

Pros

What I like is the robust hybrid capabilities and common management, which makes it easy to extend to the cloud from on-premises environments.

Cons

What I dislike is the single-tenant, physically isolated IaaS platform. A multi-tenant would be a much better option to meet our current needs.

Create a more direct way and more efficient way of integrated their system.

Experience

The company that I work for is within the transportation industry, and we need to have access to high profile information pushed. The company was looking for a better way to secure their information. There are five locations and the problems my office had were with the training seminars. First it was by video, but the video was not that informative. After the installation, we did have someone come out and work with us for two days. But we were on our own after that. We mostly use it for data storage and accounting programs. It has performed alright. The benefits are slim, mostly just having more storage space.

Pros

The speed is very good. We haven't seen problems

Cons

Sometimes the platform is inflexible. That's the only con we've seen.

Experience

We believed that VMware offered the most reasonable pricing for the amount of storage that we were looking for. Also, we believed that they had a clear focus on security and it was a top priority for this company. We only use the cloud itself. We are better equipped to work more efficiently within and across different departments. The cloud allows employees who are working on projects to more easily make adjustments to documents, etc.

Pros

I like the amount of storage that our company gets and the security features that we receive.

Cons

There is nothing I dislike about VMware.
