Please describe your organization and your role and responsibilities.
I am a pastor. I had an idea for an application as a side project. I don’t want to go into the details of the app to protect my idea.
What was your goal for working with Appy Pie?
I had an idea for an app, and I didn’t really understand what the technology requirements were for the app that I was trying to create. When I ran across Appy Pie's system of creating an app, I discovered that it wouldn’t be as difficult as I originally thought if I had the right tools. It turns out that Appy Pie had the correct tools to use for what I was trying to accomplish.
Please describe the scope of their work.
I used the platform that Appy Pie set up. I had numerous questions in the process of trying to use it. Each time I had a question or didn’t understand how to get where I was trying to go, it just took a short email to Appy Pie. They were always available to help me and address my questions as quickly as possible, and they always brought in the right technical people. If the person I spoke to didn’t have the answer, he always brought in the correct technical people to assist him in order to help me.
What was your process for selecting Appy Pie with which to work?
There were a couple of other platforms that were like Appy Pie, but the other company I tried had very poor customer service. Everything was done via animation, and I didn’t have a chance to speak directly to a person. Many times, they didn’t respond quickly. So, I was left in limbo for days and sometimes weeks.
When I ran across Appy Pie, it was the complete opposite experience.
Can you provide a ballpark dollar figure for the size of the work that they’ve done for you?
I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do with respect to the major part of my project. All I needed from Appy Pie was to direct me to where the tools were to get it accomplished. They spent a considerable amount of time trying to help me in terms of trying to identify what I needed as well as who needed to address it.
We had a lot of communication going back and forth between us, whether it was customer service or another technician or a person whose job it was to deal with a particular issue.
I don’t know the number of hours, but I would say there was a significant amount of time put into trying to assist me to get to where I wanted to go. It was an investment less than $10,000.
When was the project completed?
The project took about 30 to 45 days. This is an ongoing situation because you discover all kinds of things that need to be fixed or changed. There was an additional amount of time after I launched it that I had to perfect it. That took several weeks or more to see how it worked and to test it. They provided me with a test file, so I could actually test it on one cellphone or another, so I could see how the app worked. I thought that was great.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?
I haven’t received as many downloads of the app as I would like. I have several hundred downloads, but I would like a lot more. I think some of that is a result of promotion, which is not something they’re involved in. I do that myself.
I had a great deal of success. The app is very functional, and the people who have it are very appreciative of it. It turned out very well.
Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?
One of the greatest assets they have is their patience and their willingness to take time to help the customer. The customer service aspect of their company is outstanding. That stands out to me more than anything else.
With the other companies, their platforms are a little fancier, but the customer service was awful.
Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?
In some cases, additional flexibility would be helpful. For instance, I’d like to have a feature where a person listening to the MP3 files to be able to download the MP3 file. That’s not currently part of the platform, but that would be an additional selling point for the people who download the app. They appear to be upgrading, so they listen to their customers. That’s good.
I would like additional flexibility, such as being able to add or change an image. If there were a feature that allows you to do that, that would be great to get a fresh look. Right now, they have to reproduce the app. If there was a way to make that smoother or more flexible, or if I can do it myself, that would be great. I don’t know if that’s possible.
Also, once they submit the app to Google Play or iTunes, it's hard to change anything from that end of it. One of the downsides for me is that a technical change came up from Google Play, and they had to rebuild the app. I lost all of my statistics associated with the first building of that app when Google Play changed it. I had hundreds of downloads, so when they had to rebuild it, I had to start again. It didn’t automatically import the statistics that I had when it first started. I lost something in that whole equation. It appears that when you go on Google Play and look at the downloads, it doesn’t show anything close to the actual downloads. I would like to see that changed.
We ask you to rate Appy Pie on a scale of one to five, with five being the top score. What would you give them out of five for the quality of their work?
For schedule, as in being on time and meeting deadlines?
For cost, as in value for your money and sticking with the original estimates?
For the overall score?
How likely are you to recommend Appy Pie to a colleague, out of five?
